An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January increased in the hours before former President Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity right before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
