At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
