Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
